The Afghanistan United Front expresses its deepest condolences and sympathy to our fellow countrymen and women who were affected by the recent earthquake in Kunar, Nangarhar, Laghman, Nuristan, and Panjshir provinces. This tragic loss of life, injuries, and destruction of homes and livelihoods affects us all, and we stand with you in solidarity now and in the hard days to come.
To the people of Nurgal, Chawkay, Chapa Dara, Pech Dara, Wata Pur, and Asadabad of Kunar, where the devastation has been especially severe, the destruction is hard to comprehend and the resources are scarce. Entire villages have been flattened, and many are still trapped under the rubble of their homes. Efforts to rescue survivors and provide aid are hampered by difficult geography and adverse weather conditions. Rescuers struggle to reach remote areas because of rough mountainous terrain, landslides blocking roads to key areas, and the remote location of many affected villages. We are also concerned for women and girls, who are the most limited in accessing life-saving treatment and face heightened risks during this crisis.
UN agencies, NGOs, non-profits, businesses, and Afghans are mobilizing and delivering aid, but the scale of this crisis demands far more support, as resources are already strained by the recent return of millions of deported Afghans from Iran and Pakistan.
We appeal globally to governments, international agencies, and foundations to step forward to help those in need directly. An already existing humanitarian catastrophe, coupled with this natural disaster requires a response on an international level.
This event, while tragic, will once again demonstrate to the world the resilience of the Afghan people. However, Afghans cannot do this on their own. May all the innocent souls rest in peace, and may all the injured have a swift recovery. We are standing with our brothers and sisters in this difficult time.
